Quick answer: Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, found commercially in exactly one place on earth: the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. The finest stones are a strongly saturated pure blue to violetish blue, and nearly all tanzanite is heat-treated to bring that colour out — a stable, universally accepted practice. At Mohs 6–7 it's a "with care" stone: gorgeous in earrings, pendants and occasional-wear rings, but not built for daily knocks. It's a December birthstone.

What is tanzanite?

Tanzanite is the blue-to-violet gem variety of zoisite, colored by traces of vanadium. It's a young gem with a great story: discovered in 1967 in northern Tanzania, championed and named by Tiffany & Co. (after its homeland), and propelled by some of the most effective gem marketing of the 20th century — enthusiasm the stone honestly earns, because nothing else looks quite like it.

Why is tanzanite considered rare?

Because of geography: Tanzania is the only commercial source of gem-quality tanzanite, and within Tanzania, essentially a few square kilometers at Merelani. One source means one supply line — when those mines slow, flood or tighten, world availability and prices swing with them. That single-origin scarcity is real, and it's the honest core of tanzanite's "rarer than diamond" reputation: the claim refers to where it can come from, not to how many stones are cut in a given year.

And the sales pitch that deserves a straight answer: "buy now — the mine is running out and your stone will skyrocket." Maybe someday; nobody knows the timeline, and the same pitch has run for decades (often loudest on shopping channels selling low-grade material). Buy tanzanite because nothing else has its colour — not as a retirement plan. Gems, as ever, are for wearing, not investing.

What colour of tanzanite is most valuable?

The best tanzanite is a strongly saturated, pure blue to violetish blue — deep enough to rival fine sapphire, with a violet flash sapphire can't make. Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic: the crystal literally shows different colours (blue, violet, even burgundy) down different axes, so the cutter chooses which face the world sees. A blue-dominant orientation usually sacrifices more rough — one reason the bluest stones price higher than violet-dominant ones of equal quality. Lighting matters too: tanzanite leans blue in daylight and violet under warm indoor light. That shift isn't a flaw; it's the stone's personality.

Is tanzanite treated?

Yes — virtually all tanzanite is heat-treated, and it's the mildest, most accepted version of treatment in gems. Most zoisite comes out of the ground brownish; gentle heating awakens the blue-violet permanently. The result is stable, needs no special care, and is simply assumed across the trade. Untreated blue stones exist but are a collector's footnote.

How durable is tanzanite — is it good for an engagement ring?

Here's the straight answer: tanzanite is a beauty, not a workhorse. It rates 6–7 on the Mohs scale — softer than sapphire, aquamarine or spinel — and it has a cleavage plane, meaning a sharp knock at the wrong angle can chip it. It's also sensitive to sudden temperature swings and to ultrasonic cleaners.

  • Earrings, pendants, brooches — ideal; this is where tanzanite lives its best life.
  • Rings — occasional wear, or daily wear only with a protective bezel and real willingness to take it off for hands-on tasks.

If you want a blue stone for a hard-working engagement ring, sapphire is the gemologist's answer. If you want this blue-violet — nothing else has it.

Natural, synthetic, or imitation — what's the difference?

There's no commercially meaningful lab-grown tanzanite. What exists instead are imitations: blue glass, blue cubic zirconia, and — the convincing one — synthetic forsterite, a lab material whose colour and shift mimic tanzanite well enough to fool the eye. Disclosure and testing are what separate them.

How can you tell if a tanzanite is real?

The tells are optical, and the big one is something you can almost see unaided: pleochroism. Tilt a genuine tanzanite and it shifts among blue, violet and hints of red-violet — a doubly-refractive mineral behaving like itself. Glass and CZ can't do this: they're singly refractive, so their blue stays flat from every angle. Synthetic forsterite, the sophisticated imitation, is pleochroic — but it gives itself away under a gemologist's instruments (its two refracted rays split far more widely than tanzanite's; through a loupe, its back facets can appear doubled). As always, these are clues for the curious — a lab confirms in minutes, and a serious tanzanite deserves a report saying so.

How do I care for a tanzanite?

Warm, soapy water and a soft brush — never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and no drastic temperature changes (don't run hot water over a cold ring). Store it padded, away from harder stones, and take rings off for gym, garden and housework. Treated kindly, tanzanite keeps its colour forever — the heat-set blue does not fade.
